March 2013 Update

Monday, March 11th, 2013

It's been a while since my last post so I just figured I'd let everyone know what's been going on lately. Of course, I've been very busy over the past month and have really been focusing on my presentation for FGS! I've gotten it to a point that I'm happy with and am excited to share it with the Flash gaming community! I really can't wait for the big day!

In addition to the FGS presentation; I've been spending a lot of time working on a new game. I'm excited about this because since Night of the Loving Dead, I really haven't done a serious game project. There was Snow Day, but that was basically a weekend project for a contest. For the new game, I've drawn a lot of inspiration from the NES classic The Guardian Legend. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. So far I've got a good amount of artwork done and the basic code structure in place for moving about the world, but there is much more to do!

As for the site, I have several tutorials in mind that could be released relatively soon. However, I'm trying out video capture software because I'd like to perhaps do some video tutorials now and then. I feel that they are easier to follow along with than written ones. Below are the tutorial topics currently being looked into:

1) Introduction to Away3D
2) Data packing using bit-wise operations
3) C++ Native Extension video tutorial (may or may not do this one as the FGS presentation may cover it well enough)

Speaking at FGS 5

Wednesday, February 6th, 2013

Last year I had a great time at the Flash Gaming Summit in San Francisco and I am pleased to announce that this year I'll be speaking at the event! FGS 5 will take place in San Francisco on March 24th this year and, if its anything like it was last year, it is definitely worth making the trip out! My talk will focus on the benefits of native extensions and creating a simple, C-based native extension to help attendees get started developing their own extensions. You can visit the FGS site to see all the presenters and check back often for updates and the official program list!

I hope to see you there!

FGS Seattle to be Live Streamed Monday, July 23

I attended the Flash Gaming Summit in San Francisco earlier this year and had a blast. I also learned a lot about the Flash gaming industry and market conditions. If you missed out the first time around, don't worry, you'll have another shot. FGS will be kicking off the Casual Connect conference in Seattle on Monday, July 23!

Even if you aren't planning to attend the conference, you can still see all the presentations as FGS Seattle will be streamed live online! To keep up with all the latest info, follow the tag #FGSatCC on Twitter! And if you want to see the presentations from FGS San Francisco, you can do so at the FGS website.

FGS2012 and GDC: Flash and Xbox LIVE!

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Just in case you haven't been keeping up with the news; there was a pretty cool announcement from GDC for Flash and HTML5/Javascript developers. Microsoft revealed Xbox LIVE Web Games which means they're opening up the Xbox LIVE platform to web game developers. Microsoft will provide an API for making web service calls into the XBL platform. API's will be available for ActionScript 2, ActionScript 3 and also Javascript. (more…)

Flash Gaming Summit 2012

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

Just a quick update here; I've been working tirelessly on a new Flash project that I'm hoping to wrap up in the next couple weeks. Working on this project has given me an idea for a great tutorial that I think some game developers will appreciate!

I also have started thinking about doing an overhaul on the blog and making it a more general development-type blog as I've been dipping my hands into a variety of technologies as of late. It would probably still be very heavily Flash-focused, but it never hurts to expand one's horizons. In addition to this, a new design couldn't hurt. I'm not sure when I'll get around to this though as I've got a lot of cool stuff going on at the moment!

One thing I'm looking forward to is the upcoming Flash Gaming Summit in San Francisco. The event is scheduled to take place on March 4, and while I've never been to one of these events before, it is looking likely that I will attend this year. If you're interested check out the summit site for all the details! Be sure to hunt around for discount promo codes before purchasing your ticket. They're all over the place!
