Tutorial: Flash and C++ Native Extension

Last week I decided to look into building a native extension for AIR and was very surprised by the lack of quality resources and tutorials for doing so. I was able to find examples for Android using Java and for iOS using Objective-C, but pretty much nothing for a standard Windows C++ project. I was eventually able to get things up and running by piecing together bits of information from various sources, but I thought I'd take the time to write a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this so that perhaps others will have an easier time. Calculating angles and moving objects accordingly

One of the most common tasks in Flash game development is calculating angles. This becomes important in even simple 2D games such as shooters where the player can fire bullets in all directions. If you're anything like me, you're probably not very good with math. I typically will find other ways to get the job done, and indeed I had my own way for figuring bullet paths, but eventually I decided to use real angles and I'm pleased to say it really isn't that bad. Use JSFL to change Publish Settings in Flash

It's been a while since I’ve touched on JSFL, but recently I found myself diving into it again for a project at work and decided to share a method for updating the publish settings of an .fla file using JSFL. When I initially set out to do this, I wasn't sure where to begin and after a bit of googling, I found a lot of others who had run into the same problem, but a simple solution wasn't readily available. Compiling for AIR 2.7 in Flash CS 5.5

I've been pretty busy recently with building a new mobile app that is now nearing completion. I wanted to make use of AIR 2.7 because it has been shown to be much faster on iOS devices than the previous packager. However, as noted in the article, it hasn't yet been implemented in any official tools and is only available via the command line. That wasn't going to cut it for what I needed to do so I went digging around the net with google and came across this post. This was exactly what I was looking for!

Tutorial: Kinect to Flash

In this tutorial, you will learn how to make Microsoft’s Kinect sensor communicate with an swf file as I recently demonstrated in a previous post. It actually doesn’t require a ton of code, but it does involve several different technologies and there is a bit of set up to get the Kinect side going that I won’t be going into detail on. However, links to the channel9 video tutorials are provided.

This tutorial will focus on the modifications to the C# code, the Node.js server and of course the Flash file and ActionScript. As usual, all files are available for download at the end of this tutorial. (more…)
