Big news from Adobe MAX
Tuesday, October 4th, 2011With all the excitement surrounding Apple's iPhone 4S today, it may have been easy to overlook a couple of big announcements that have come out of Adobe MAX the last couple days. Firstly, it was announced that Adobe has acquired Nitobi; the group responsible for PhoneGap. I only recently got around to playing with PhoneGap, but it looks really cool! In short, it allows you to make cross platform mobile applications using HTML and JavaScript. From what I've seen, it allows for a bit more control over native device elements than Flash and AIR. It will be interesting to see what kind of an impact Adobe has on the platform.
The Nitobi announcement was certainly big news, but today brought something equally as impressive; possibly more so depending on your interests. Epic Games, the studio behind hits such as Unreal Tournament and Gears of War, announced Flash support within their hugely successful Unreal Engine 3. As a life-long gamer and a developer, I couldn't be more excited about this announcement! Below is a video showing off the Unreal Engine running in Flash Player 11.
The support from Epic shows that Flash is moving onto new frontiers for the technology and will continue to play an ever-expanding role in game development.
